A Last Hurrah

Story: Mummy on the Orient Express
Written By: Jamie Matheson
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2014

The Doctor and Clara arrive on the future "Orient Express", which travels in space...also there is a Mummy loose on the Train that kills whoever sees it after 66 seconds.  Standard stuff really!  Initially, I was disappointed to see the Doctor and Clara traveling together after last week's major argument, but luckily the episode does a solid job of explaining that it has been weeks since that argument, Clara has cooled off enough to try and end things with the Doctor on a good note.  She doesn't want to end things on a slammed door, but this is meant to be their last hurrah.
So the Doctor takes her to this space train, and they end up on the case of this Mummy that will only reveal itself to one passenger at a time, and kills them within 66 seconds.  It is a wonderful episode really; one that blends adventure, Doctor Who wackiness (mummies on a space train), and mild horror (that mummy is really done well). There were good supporting characters, particularly Perkins.  I also thought the conclusion was nicely done, particularly the last few scenes after the day is won.

Again the performances from Capaldi and Coleman are great, and at the end even more characterization is utilized, with Clara comparing what the Doctor does to an addiction...before lying to Danny and saying she will be leaving the Doctor for good soon and than telling the Doctor that she isn't ready to leave and wants more adventures...who is really addicted?  You have to wonder how this will all play out for the Doctor and Clara...and with her and Danny.

This has so far been the strongest season week to week in a while, and I have a feeling it isn't going to peter out so close to the finish line!
