Follow the Light, Break the Glass

Story: Fugitive of the Judoon
Written By: Vinay Patel & Chris Chibnall
Length: 50 Minutes
Year: 2020

The Judoon are descending in on Earth to find a fugitive, but the Doctor gets wind and decides to intervene, as they should have no jurisdiction there.  The Doctor's intervention runs into trouble when the alleged targets of this Judoon patrol aren't forthcoming in what may be going on.  Ruth seems to know nothing, while her husband Lee seems to know something but won't give it away.
Meanwhile, Graham is zapped away to a spaceship in the far reaches of space, being run by...Captain Jack Harkness!  It's been some time since we've seen that face.  Jack was attempting to bring in the Doctor, but the scoop he bought in order to do so is entirely accurate, and grabbed the wrong person.  He later attempts to grab the Doctor again, but ends up with only Yaz and Ryan. Unable to grab the Doctor and soon about to be attacked by nanogenes, he sets the ship to send the TARDIS team back from where they came from, and with a message for the Doctor "Beware the Lone Cyberman, don't give it wants no matter the cost."  That's something to look forward to...and since Jack does say that he will be watching and be there for here, we have hope that he will be back yet again!

Back on Earth, Lee is caught up with the Judoon and their current employer, who kills Lee.  Not before he sends a mysterious text to Ruth.  When the Judoon arrive to take Ruth, the text message awakens something inside her, and she is able to take down some Judoon before breaking the horn off their leader's head, disgracing him.  The Judoon leave, but the Doctor still needs to understand what is going on with Ruth.  They use the mysterious text as a guide (follow the light, break the glass), and head to the Lighthouse Ruth was raised in.  While there the Doctor discovers the TARDIS barried in an unmarked grave, and Ruth pushes an emergency button that says "break glass" and she has all her memories restored...it turns out she is the Doctor!

Maybe.  Hard to say, she has no memory of the 13th Doctor and naturally assumes she is the future, but as the 13th Doctor doesn't recognize her either...she can't be the past. Or can she?  The Master claimed there is something all Gallifreyans have forgotten.  The Judoon collect the TARDIS with both "Doctors" inside, and their employer is revealed to not be the main contractor, but is in fact another Gallifreyan.  But they believe that Gallifrey is still out there fine and dandy, while the Doctor has seen it destroyed by the Master (which is really frustrating since the Doctor worked so damn hard to restore in the first place).

The Doctors thwart the Judoon and are able to move on, but the 13th is pretty wrecked by this whole thing when she is returned to her TARDIS team on Earth.  She may have a seriously messed up backstory that she has no memories of, or a future that seems just as confusing (and messy and more violent than she'd like).  Meanwhile Gallifrey is still destroyed, there is another mystery left by our old friend Jack, the Doctor's past is unresolved and the Master is still out there somewhere.  But before they can do anything about it, the TARDIS alerts the Doctor of major issues on three different continents on Earth. They've got some work to do.

This is a packed episode, one that is very key to this particular series of the show going forward.  It builds on what "Spyfall" set up and adds plenty of twists. I'm not sure I will be able to buy it if they decide to add yet another Doctor in between incarnations or if she takes place prior to the First Doctor. But there are other ways this could all unfold, and I am intrigued to find out where it all goes.

NEXT TIME: Three Continents
