Story: Dark Water
Written By: Steven Moffat
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2014
Danny Pink is hit by a car and killed...and Clara is in major grief. She attempts to trap the Doctor and force him to reverse it, but he sees through that plan and instead tries to find wherever Danny might have gone, a possible afterlife (and he does so in spite of Clara's betrayal). Danny is in "the Nethersphere", a supposed afterlife, where you will feel whatever they do to your body in death.
The Doctor and Clara end up at a place called 3W, which is preserving the dead in weird fish tanks filled with what they call dark water...a substance in which only organic material can be seen. 3W is also being run by a mysterious woman we have seen all year..Missy. It is becomes clear early on that the Cybermen are being hidden in the tanks, the bodies being converted Cybermen, and that Missy is not what she seems. Danny has a rough conversation with Clara from the real world...and he seems close to making the decision of deleting his emotions and becoming a full on Cybermen near the end of the episode....I'm certain he will somehow decide against it.
The Nethersphere itself is actually a piece of the Matrix from Gallifrey...and the minds of the dead are being held in there, and the idea that they would feel their bodies being cremated or grow cold is all part of a plan to have them willingly delete their emotions and submit to being Cybermen. And then Missy drops a major bomb...she is a Time Lady...and not just any Time Lady.
She is the Master! He has regenerated into a She and somehow escaped his/her fate on Gallifrey. It is a pretty exciting twist, though part of me was disappointed. Not that the Master is now a woman, but that our mysterious villain is not somebody new. I was interested to see a new villain, but once again the show feels the need to fall back on familiar foes. Still, the reveal that she was the Master was quite fun and unexpected (at least for me, because I wasn't really thinking about the character in terms of what regular character from the past is she).
We know who Missy is, now can the Doctor stop her and the Cybermen next week?
