Ghosts of the Drum

Story: Under the Lake

A classic Base Under Siege Doctor Who story, with ghosts!  The TARDIS lands on an underwater base placed in a flooded town, and the crew of the base is being attacked by ghosts of some kind. It's classic Doctor Who fun, and it just works on every level.  Even though in many ways it is set up for the second part (I am enjoying that Moffat is having more two-part stories this year, after nearly 2 years with very few-to-none), this episode is wholly satisfying.
Sometimes, part of the problem with an episode you just enjoyed through and through, is that it can be difficult to articulate what it is you liked about it...I am finding that, for the moment I can't really say more than, this was fun, watch it!  Can't wait until the second part....of course maybe in time and upon further rewatches, I will find more to say, maybe on the positive of negative side.

I can say that I enjoyed that one of the base crew members, in fact its de facto leader (the original commander of the base is killed in the opening moments and spends the rest of the episode as a silent ghost), was deaf and could only communicate via a sign language interpreter.  Nice way to shake things up and do something original with a character, and get a little diversity.  I also enjoyed the character moments between the Doctor and Clara...with his trying to talk her out of trying to be like the Doctor...and her flash cards for things the Doctor should be saying to people (instead of his usual rude and sometimes careless comments).  Nice touches to flesh out a good monster of the week story.

It has all the makings of a cracking Who story: a cool setting, decent banter between the Doctor and his companion, a scary monster, good supporting characters, a very Doctor Who cliffhanger (the Doctor goes back in time with some of the crewmembers to find out what happened before the Village flooded, and we see in the future that he has become a ghost!)...what more could you want really?  I think it is safe to say that I have few complaints about this one, it just ticked all the right boxes for me, more so than the opening two-parter.

NEXT TIME: The Dark, the Sword, the Forsaken, the Temple
