Story: The Tsuranga Conundrum
Written By: Chris Chibnall
Length: 50 Minutes
Year: 2018
The Doctor and friends are digging through a junk planet, and accidentally stumble onto a sonic mine, which zaps them all. When they awake, they are on a med ship, and have been traveling for four days away from the TARDIS. Things get stickier still when a crazy little alien that eats everything in it's path gets on the ship and begins wrecking the place.
It's a pretty fun episode and it has a fun new alien threat that isn't really an evil alien monster...just a little creature that eats machines for their energy output. It might be one of the best new monsters the show has had in quite some time. I love how the design rides the line between creepy little devil and kind of cutesy.
The episode also continued Chibnall's trend of giving our regulars solid character development and their own little moments. This episode gave us a little more on Ryan, as there is a pregnant soon to be father on the ship, who claims to not be ready for the role...which obviously reminds Ryan of his own absent father, and gives Chibnall an excuse to go deeper into how Ryan's mom died, and how his father had never really been there for him. The only thing I hope is that going forward Ryan begins to be crack his shell a little more around Graham.
A solid sci-fi premise, action, character moments, and a fun new monster...it's an episode I expect will rank high for me as the season goes on!
