The Fisher King

Story: Before the Flood
Written By: Toby Whithouse
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2015

I really enjoyed this two parter.  The second episode continues the feeling and tone of a classic Doctor Who story, mixed with the timey-wimey stroytelling of the Moffat era. It is a nice blend of the old and the new, and it is just an enjoyable ride.
This episode sees the Doctor and a couple crewmembers from the underwater base travel to the 1980s before the town where the base is located was flooded.  There they meet the Undertaker that was the first ghost in the previous episode, and they find the being causing all the problems...The Fisher King. This is a nicely designed monster that looks and sounds cool, and serves as a nice villain for the Doctor to bounce off of.

The Doctor manages to save the day using some kind of paradox that I only half understand after watching the episode for the second time.  It is a little bit of a cheat of the writer not really having answers while simultaneously trying to make it seem as if that is the point all along.  Which came first, the writer coming up with an ending he didn't understand...or the idea that that's the whole point of the story?  Who wrote Beethoven's 5th?

Maybe when I finally get this episode on blu-ray and give it a few rewatches, I will figure out the whole ending and how it all pieced together...but ti really doesn't matter, because I just enjoyed the atmospheric story being told here...a cool monster, ghosts, some time travel paradox goofiness, and a solid performance from both our leads and their supporting characters. I actually think I enjoyed this more than the epic sweeping Davros/Master two part opener...because that second part kind of let me down when I rewatched it.

I am enjoying the classic feel of this series, like last year the tone is a little more low key compared to the comic adventures of Matt Smith, but there are cliffhangers and a bit of classic series inspired style tales being told here, infused with just enough of the new series style to keep everyone satisfied.
