Truth or Consequences

Story: The Zygon Invasion
Written By: Peter Harness
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2015

Another great start to another great two parter this year.  This one is a follow up to the Zygon storyline of the 50th Anniversary Special, which is good, because I kind of wanted some closure on the Zygon stuff that we never really got in that special. It also sees the return of Osgood who was seemingly killed during last years finale by the Master.  We learn here that following "Day of the Doctor" both the Zygon Osgood stayed in her form with her, and the two became the embodiment of a truce between the two factions. Which Osgood was killed during "Death in Heaven" is not ever explicitly stated, though I personally think it was probably the Zygon Osgood. I guess who knows or cares.
Essentially a peace treaty was reached between the Zygons and the Humans, with the humans allowing hundreds of thousands of Zygons to live in secret on Earth and in Human form.  But now a rebellious faction of these Zygons want to live in their own form and take over the planet. Who is human and who Zygon is often called into question, and the episode handles all of it's elements perfectly.

The big twist comes near the end, when it is revealed that Clara has actually been duplicated by the Zygons, and that the Clara we've followed for most of the episode is, in fact, a member of the rebellion and a villain.  The episode ends with her firing a missile towards the plane the Doctor and Osgood are on.

It's a good story of intrigue and paranoia, another solid mix of classic and modern Doctor Who.  It is a worthy follow-up to "Day of the Doctor" and a solid full-fledged revival of the Zygons...it is a perfect updating of these monsters while still staying true to their original appearance with Tom Baker.  I would say that the Zygons have possibly been one of the best Classic Monster Revivals of the modern show, if they were a little bit of window dressing in the 50th special, they are fully realized here...and it is fun, scary, and wonderful.

NEXT TIME: Bonnie the Zygon
