Story: The Eleventh Hour
Written By: Steven Moffat
Length: 65 Minutes
Year: 2010
Woah. "The End of Time" ended the RTD and Tenth Doctor's Eras quite well I think. It was this rip-roaring sci-fi/fantasy extravaganza...with this emotions-on-his-sleeve Doctor fearing the end of his life and regretting his latest decisions. Tennant gave a knock out performance, and Part 2 was exceptionally well written. Tennant and Simm both went out with big bangs...and then we got the last 15 minutes, which really made you feel for his doctor. It was going to be hard for a new Doctor and story to top this epic finale right off the bat...right? Wrong. This episode is amazing, and is so rewatchable it is insane.
The new titles and theme arrangement are pretty great. The new version of the classic tune needed some getting used to, but once I listened to it enough it grew on me fairly quickly. The new vortex visuals are stunning. More depth than the RTD era had. Loving them.
As for the story itself its exciting, fun, manic, and hilarious in all the right spots. It knows when to slow down and when to pick up the pace. I think the plot is thin, but intro stories always should have a thin story and let characters take precedent. Matt Smith gives a great new version of the Doctor, who is completely his own while still being reminiscent of Tennant, Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, or even Christopher Eccleston. He was, within 5 minutes, THE Doctor.
Karen Gillan is pretty good as Amy Pond as well, a little girl who grew up believing her imaginary friend was real, only to have him show up 12 years later and throw her all out of whack. The scenes with both young Amy and older Amy are brilliant, and the rapport with Smith and Gillan is already quite good.
All in all it is probably one of the best introductory story for any Doctor...and the epic 2 minute trailer at the end made the wait for info and trailers and images of this new season after over a year of waiting seemed worth it.
