The Sarah Jane Adventures - Series 4 Recap

Without a doubt in my mind: best season of SJA. Despite the kind of sad loss of Luke this season, he still makes a nice exit in "The Nightmare Man", and has a cameo or mention in every episode until the finale, in which he makes a good return...I'd say this season had a good chemistry between or regulars. The whole Rani/Clyde hint at a potential relationship was well executed and subtle (thank god they didn't bang it over our heads).

I think every story was solid, "Lost in Time" was the only one that wasn't really good, but even it was still an entertaining and well made story. But with a strong exit for Luke in the premiere (again wasn't the best story, but it did its job right and focused on our departing hero), a certainly entertaining episode in "The Vault of Secrets", the fantastic "Death of the Doctor" (which gave us both Jo Grant and Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor...and a way better SJA/Doctor story than "Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith"), the great Rani/Clyde episode of "The Empty Planet", and the solid (both parts worked!) "Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith" finale...I can't complain about this season.

Season 1 they found their feet, Season 2 they dropped the weak link of Maria and had a consistently strong season until the conclusion, then Season 3 was step backward, a little rockier and not as solid...Season 4 is definitely the peak of SJA. I know they are booked for a fifth season, and hopefully it will be as good as this season was...but I have a feeling they won't be able to top this year. They really knocked it out of the park, and if they had no plans to have the show return for a fifth year...I would not be disappointed.

EDIT: On April 19, 2011 Sarah Jane Smith herself, Elizabeth Sladen, died after a battle with cancer. I didn't even know she was sick...most of us fans didn't. She was apparently a very private person. Only three of her stories were completed for the next series, and I hope that the BBC decides to air them in honor of her. It is terribly sad news...especially since so recently we also lost the Brigadier. I look forward to seeing her final episodes, and hope that Davies and Co. find a fitting tribute and end for the show. RIP Lis.

NEXT TIME: Father Christmas
