Moffat pens this great episode that's story is kept simple but effective. It is all kicked off essentially by the Doctor being bored and alone with his thoughts. He thinks back to a dream he had as a child, a nightmare he conjectures everyone must have, and believes that it can be traced back to some kind of being that exists in perfect hiding. He enlists Clara for help in figuring out this whole mystery he has purely made up (by using some telekinetic link to the TARDIS in order to travel in her timeline to figure out when she had the dream), but she is coming off a rather bad date with Danny Pink, and gets distracted and seems to have accidentally traveled into his timeline to when he has the dream (then later travels to the distant future to find someone that is clearly Danny's ancestor).
The episode is strong, with some great characterizations for Clara, Danny, and the Twelfth Doctor. Capadli really shines in this episode, showing just how mad and what a thinker his Doctor is. Then we get a killer ending with the TARDIS not traveling within Clara or Danny's timeline...but the Doctor's! We get a bit of significance to the barn that the War Doctor traveled to in "Day of the Doctor", and we find out Clara is super key to the Doctor becoming the man he is. It is super fanwanky, yet done in such an elegant way that I find it hard to complain about it.
There is some great writing, directing, and performances in this episode, and it despite having some fine special effects sprinkled in here and there, it never relies on them. This is a killer episode, I really liked it, and if this is the quality Mofatt wishes to strive for this year, I am excited to see more.
