Story: Ascension of the Cybermen
Written By: Chris Chibnall
Length: 50 Minutes
Year: 2020
I know everyone lamented Series 11 (I thought it was mostly fine, even if not exceptional), Series 12 has really been firing on all cylinders. The opener that brought us a new Master, the Judoon episode that threw us a curveball with another previously unknown Doctor, a reappearance of Captain Jack, and the Mary Shelley/Lone Cyberman episode of last week...it's all been leading here!
The Doctor and the gang have come to a small refugee settlement in the aftermath of the Cyber Wars. They attempt to set up defenses against the Cybermen, but the Lone Cyberman and his Cyber Drones quickly dash those plans. The Doctor commands her companions take off with the other humans to safety. Yaz and Graham are able to make it, but Ryan gets separated and left behind in some Cyberman firefight.
Yaz and Graham, along with the three surviving humans, end up on a giant Cybership, which is actually carrying thousands of Cybermen. And when the Lone Cyberman arrives, he awakens them and sends them to eradicate the humans on the ship. Meanwhile, The Doctor (with Ryan and another human survivor Ethan) make their way in a stolen Cyber-Ship to Ko Sharmus (which they think is a planet but is actually a man), in order to make their way to "The Boundary" a seemingly mystical space phenomenon that should lead them to utter safety from the Cybermen.
The big cliffhanger has the Cybermen burst into the room holding Yaz, Graham, and the humans and they begin blasting away...and the gateway to the Boundary opens up for the Doctor. It reveals that on the other side is Gallifrey (still destroyed)...and then the Master pops back out. Time for the thrilling conclusion next week.
I really liked this episode. The Cybermen are used perfectly...just as they were in Capaldi's penultimate outing. The brand new designs are pretty good. Something of a mixture of the latter Smith/Capaldi era design, with a helmet that harkens back to the 70s. I think I preferred the helmets used in "Nightmare in Silver" on, but the Cybermen constantly change their look, so whatever. As for the episode, it just builds perfectly to that cliffhanger, and it is one that genuinely left me sad that I have to wait another week to wrap it all up. I want answers to the whole Gallifrey/Master/Other Doctor thing. Even if I fear these answers may end up being a big ol' continuity nightmare.
