Story: Can You Hear Me?

Two immortal Gods are feeding off nightmares of human beings throughout history...it's up to the Doctor to put an end to it!  This is a totally classic Who premise.  I like it.  It reminds me of when the show has delved into other immortal beings from higher dimensions, like the Guardians or the Eternals (both referenced), or the crazy Frog thing from last year's "It Takes You Away."  I dig that stuff. The episode is also full of creepy imagery.  Beyond the nightmares, there is a lot of creepy floating fingers hanging around.  Gross but fun!
Another solid point is that the episode works hard to develop some character growth and development for our companions.  It does this by way of their fears opening a window into who they are deep down.  Ryan visiting his friend back home has made him begin to realize that he can't travel with the Doctor forever, because his friends and everyone back home may need them, and he is going to keep on changing and getting older as he travels...what will become of his old life if he wanders forever.  Yaz is reminded of a darker time in her youth, before she was able to sort her life out.  And Graham faces up to the fact that he is still very much afraid that his cancer may someday return.  And this time he won't have someone like Grace to see him through.

This is all solid material to work with.  If they are working towards an exit for any of our current companion line-up, then I would not be surprised.  Ryan seems to be particularly leaning towards an exit, possibly before the others.  We shall see, maybe I am reading more into it.  But that conversation between he and Yaz about how long they can keep doing this seems to be quite the foreshadowing of things to come.

All in all, I rather enjoyed this episode.  Now to settle in for next week's episode in which they go to meet Mary Shelley at the time of Frankenstein's inception which will discount a ton of Eighth Doctor Big Finish material! Oh boy...

NEXT TIME: Creating Frankenstein
