King Hydroflax

Story: The Husbands of River Song
Written By: Steven Moffat
Length: 60 Minutes
Year: 2015

Funnily enough, I watched the 2015 Christmas Special, enjoyed it...then forgot about it.  Didn't realize I hadn't reviewed it here until a few months ago, and have sort of put off revisiting it until it was closer to the season, even though it was never very Christmassy.  Now that I have rewatched it?  It is a helluva good time.  I think I was just too busy to remember to review it last year, and after a while it just slipped my mind.  But now that I have given another look I think it is pretty entertaining.
The Doctor gets inadvertently recruited by River Song (who doesn't recognize him or even know that his newest incarnation ever existed), to perform a surgery on her husband, King Hydroflax. The fact that she is married is a surprise to the Doctor, who thought he was the only "spouse" of River.  But not only is she married to this King (or as she keeps pointing out, to the diamond in his head), she is also married to some guy named Ramon...and she even mentions a wife at one point. The Doctor feels a bit let down, feels a little less special...and seeing what River is like without him comes a bit of a shock to him, as she is a tad more ruthless and apparently steals the TARDIS from time to time.

It is a fun episode, which in a Christmas Special is all you really need...but this one also has some heart, as we get what is likely to be, the final appearance of River Song.  The Doctor in the end, takes her to the Singing Towers, first mentioned in her original appearance back with David Tennant, which was described as the last time she saw the Doctor.  Seeing it finally take place was sweet, and heartwarming...and really I would hate for River to be tainted by further adventures. Let us leave her at this moment. It is a proper way to see her go out...and since it is meant to be the final time she sees the Doctor before she meets her end with the Tenth Doctor, we can't have her having more adventures with Capaldi or any future Doctors when she didn't know this incarnation at all beforehand.

I have a feeling this was Moffat's final goodbye to this character (he is only around for one more year anyhow), River was a lot of fun, she was a fun concept and brought to life wonderfully by Kingston, and if this is truly (and I suspect it is) the final time we see her on screen?  A great final bow for her.
