Return of Shadow King

Story: Class: Co-Owner of a Lonely Heart
Written By: Patrick Ness
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2016

In the first episode of a two-parter for "Class," April begins to act more and more erratic, as the Shadow King attempts to take more control of her from his realm.  As in other episodes, her struggle with the alien beings also coincides with a personal problem, this time it is dealing with the return of her father from prison (it was briefly explained in an earlier episode that her father attempted suicide by driving off the road, the resulting accident left April unharmed but her mother paralyzed). April's issues with her father come to ahead when she attacks him with swords that come from the Shadow King, Coracinus as he attempts to more powerfully connect to her.  Oh, and she and Ram have sex for the first time too! Meanwhile, while the main story involving April develops, strange Petals seem to be invading London.
The episode also introduces a new Headteacher for the school, Dorothea Ames, who has been sent to take over the school (after the death of the previous headteacher) by the Governors, a mysterious group that's been hinted at before.  She attempts to convince Quill to help her by offering her freedom from the thing in her head that makes her obey Charlie. All of these storylines develop further and are resolved (or at least set up for future events) in the following episode.

This was a great episode by the way, one of the strongest of the show so far.  April gets a lot of time to shine, the storylines build nicely, and it was really just a success in all regards. It doesn't have the benefit of closure, as it is part one of a two-part story (meaning we are left with a big ol' cliffhanger...namely April and Ram jump into a crack that leads to the Underneath where the Shadow Kin reside), but it is still a fine opener for that two-part story, and left me excited for the next time.

NEXT TIME: The Petals
