Skin Peeling Dragon

Story: Class: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo
Written By: Patrick Ness
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2016

The second episode of "Class" is where it just about starts to come into it's own.  It still had some issues, but it was definitely a stronger altogether episode than the first entry.   This episode sees Ram dealing with the aftermath of the pilot, in that first episode he lost a lot...his girlfriend was killed in front of his eyes, and he lost his leg (replaced with a bionic leg by the Doctor).  So he is struggling both physically and emotionally, not playing football as well. And just when you think things couldn't get any worse for Ram...he discovers a corpse skinned in the locker room. This, by the way, was way more gory and graphic than I was expecting from this show.  This is not just a show for Young Adults. This is a genuinely mature show that can throw in gore when it needs to.
The episode deals with Ram and his troubles, as his football coach plays the villain who has some kind of mysterious moving tattoo of dragon that is controlling him and skinning people alive.  If I had a complaint for this episode, it would be that the mystery of what exactly is going on with the coach is held onto for much too long...having him sporadically throughout the episode be alone and trying to convince himself that he is in control, all leading up to a massive info dump at the end.  There had to be a way to sort slowly doll this info out without him going into a monologue about how he came to get the tattoo and what it will all end up doing.

For the characters, I enjoyed this one a lot...I think the young cast is quite good, and Ram got a lot of great emotional stuff to do here.  I am not entirely sure I am sold on Miss Quill.  The way she is written is too "I am such a badass" and the actor goes for it in spades...it just feels laid on a bit too thick.  She grates on me more often than not.  Maybe that will change over time...but for now, she is my least favorite element of the series.
