Story: The Hungry Earth
Written By: Chris Chibnall
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2010
The Hungry Earth is disappointing. Granted it was disappointing the first time you got a glimpse of the Silurians and discovered the cool looking rumored Silurian from a blurry on set photo a while ago was actually wearing a mask, and that the ACTUAL Silurians look like generic aliens with bad make up. With the mask they look far closer to the original Silurians, even if given a slicker appearance. Its unfortunate they went the Star Trek route of just a bad face make up.
As for the story, pretty weak, some plot holes, not terribly exciting. I thought the Doctor-Rory interaction worked well, and there was a decent atmosphere about the episode, but the fact that this is like the the third story already this series set in a small English village make it seem rather played out already.
The cliffhanger was boring, and I think the reintroduction of the Silurians was the worst monster-revival since the shows return. It didn't explain the background very well, and my brother didn't understand nor care for them at all. The fact that they don't look ANYTHING like the original make them even harder to swallow.
It was a poorly written episode. It was sloppy. I continue to like Rory, Amy, and the 11th Doctor, but I feel this episode was mostly kind of wasteful, we'll see how the second part handles.
