Story: A Town Called Mercy
Written By: Toby Whithouse
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2012
This western themed episode has the Doctor and his companions travel to the Old West, to find a town under threat from a cyborg they call The Gunslinger. You leave the town, he kills you...and until he kills the practicing doctor in the town, he won't go away. This Doctor (not THE Doctor) is an alien that is a war criminal who crashed on earth, and the cyborg that he created during the war won't stop until it gets revenge.
This has a lot of good Western themes and motifs that aren't overly played up, which helps the episode work. If it had been just a bunch of cliches exploited for jokes than this might have fallen apart and been much lamer sooner...but it worked in the cliches nicely, and it had a story that really worked, and not just as a western but as a episode of "Doctor Who" too.
Probably won't ever be my favorite episode, but I think this worked well.
