Story: The Seeds of Doom
Written By: Robert Banks Stewart
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1976

"The Seeds of Doom" is not only a solid end to a pretty solid season, it is also one of the best Doctor Who serials ever made. As I was watching this story not only did I find it completely engaging without any real drag (especially rare for a 6-parter) but I also found the special effects and visuals to hold up pretty well. Classic Doctor Who gets poked fun of a lot for its supposed cheap sets, bad acting, silly monsters, and goofy costuming, but when you look at the bulk of the series...it is far far better than it is ever given credit for.
Firstly, the sets were rather wobbly in the 60s which is more due to the time it was made than anything else...and then again they looked really cheap in the 80s. By the end of the 60s, and especially throughout most of the 70s, the production teams made fantastic use of budget, knowing where to cut corners and how to make things work on low budgets, it was in the 80s that the budget stayed the same as inflation grew...and the shows started to look really crappy, hire bad actors, and make silly costumes and monsters.

"The Seeds of Doom" looks great, certainly dated, but for its time the effects and visuals are stunning, especially for a low budget TV show with a bad reputation for cheesy effects. The story is great, as are all the characters that come and go in this story. The story holds up particularly well, as environmentalism has only grown since the 70s...now its pretty mainstream (go green!).

This would be on any list to potential new Who fans looking to test the waters of the Classic series, its fun, its exciting, Tom Baker and Liz Sladen are in top form, as are the entrie supporting cast, and the Krynoid effects and overall look of the story are wonderful.
