Story: Rose
Written By: Russell T. Davies
Length: 45 Minutes
Year: 2005
“Rose” is not the best episode of Doctor Who ever. It’s not even the best episode of this first series of the revival. But it’s the first episode of the most successful period in Doctor Who’s 40 year history, and that makes it damned important. “Rose” is what the TV movie should have been…but the people in charge then weren’t the right people for the job. Who is the right person for the job? It turns out it’s a middle-aged gay guy who made his earlier success on writing a show about being homosexual: Russell T. Davies. And despite the controversy he has had with some fans over his handling of the new series, he did what no Who fan would have thought possible in 2004, he brought Doctor Who back to TV again. He made it popular. He made it trendy and cool, and made it new and different from the original but honored it well, and didn’t do anything that totally went against the original show’s intentions.
So, “Rose”? It’s decent. It has mystery behind the Doctor. We don’t learn all we need to know about him. But we get a tiny little Doctor story in the Autons (which I must give kudos again to Davies, for bringing back a sweet monster without making it a big to do). We meet Rose, her mother and her boyfriend. We discover a brand new TARDIS that looks great, but not nearly as great as the TV movie. We learn the basic essentials for what the show can do. Travel in time and space. We meet…THE DOCTOR. The 9th Doctor is Christopher Eccleston, and he’s fantastic right from the get go. He captures the Doctor’s spirit so well, and makes him his own instantly.
And in the end Rose joins the Doctor and we are off…
