Story: The Christmas Invasion
Written By: Russell T. Davies
Length: 60 Minutes
Year: 2005
The first ever Doctor Who Christmas special (if we don’t count “Feast of Stephen” from the First Doctor’s era...which we don’t). It’s all right. It is a bit slow at times, a bit dull, maybe even a tad mediocre...but it’s the first complete story with David Tennant, and it’s the first thing I ever really truly watched after the Children in Need Special (which I watched only out of curiosity about regeneration). I don’t think the story really thrilled me, but it was a general feeling I liked.
The Sycorax are a nice monster, and work well for the story, but its David Tennant’s big reveal at the end of the episode that sold me. The camera zooms into the TARDIS doors, they open up, and he’s finally out of bed and he just takes control, owns the scene and almost flawlessly for everyone watching...he IS the Doctor.
That’s no easy task, especially when the show was suddenly being watched. By people. And it was popular! Eccleston was a hit...and now he, like a new Patrick Troughton, must take on the almost impossible task. Pertwee, Davison, McCoy, and the Bakers had it easy, it was more established at the time, but it was never done before Troughton, and it was once again new to the general viewing audience for Tennant. Both did it so successfully, that the show endured.
Now Tennant is accepted, lets start the actual next series!
