Story: The Trial of a Time Lord, Parts 13-14: The Ultimate Foe
Written By: Robert Holmes & Pip and Jan Baker
Length: 2 Episodes
Year: 1986
The finale storyline to the Trial of a Time Lord is weak. It moves well, but every reveal is more confusing than the last. Our main villain, the Valeyard, turns out to be an evil incarnation of the Doctor somewhere between his 11th and 12th incarnations. THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.
Then Mel shows up for no reason. As does a character from the first story Sabalom Glitz. Neither showing up at the trial does anything really except be a plot convenience. The Matrix battle is nothing short of puzzling.
Then there is the worst thing, they take the epic and rather good death of Peri, and make it a happy ending, Peri is alive, and she married Brian Blessed. It makes NO sense.
In the end a lot of the most interesting questions opened up by Robert Holmes in the beginning were left unanswered, for he died before the story was finished. Eric Saward left the show due to conflicts with this story with JNT. The bad backstage turmoil obviously effected this bad wrap up to a mediocre season.
