This is actually a pretty entertaining story. The Mara is some kind of weird evil snake consciousness that possesses Tegan. Its hard to remember all the details, but I definitely enjoyed this one.
I think if you are looking for Fifth Doctor stories to check out, something for the new Who fan, this should be on the list. This is the first story in which I started to really get into the Peter Davison years, now I'm a fan.
I must admit the snake effects near the end are rather lame (the DVD has a nice alternative if you really can't get past it), and like everything in the 80s, its all far to bright.
