So Doctor Who was pretty much all but canceled at the end of Season 22, but the BBC refused to admit it. After a giant stink made by JNT, Ian Levine, and fans it was brought back for a 14 Episode season, now reverted back to the 25 Minute episodes. The return to the airwaves wasn't after Ian Levine and many Z-list musicians and some cast members of the show produced a god awful song called "Doctor in Distress" made like a benefit song, like "We Are The World". They sunk low. The show probably should have just died. It was dead anyways.
So the show was effectively on trial. JNT and Eric Saward came up with an idea of having the show reflect its position in reality. BAD IDEA. Colin Baker was not entirely pleased with the idea. When you think about it, its really not a good idea. What should have been done was to prove the shows worth. They should have changed Baker's coat, no one would have complained. They should have written 4 STRONG stories and brought the show back into high gear, but this concept idea was used instead.

Now the first part is probably the best. The trial segments aren't as intrusive as they become throughout the story, and the story that we watch is pretty decent. The trial actually has a bit of mysterious quality to it here in the beginning. Oh how it will change.
