Story: Revelation of the Daleks
Written By: Eric Saward
Length: 2 Episodes
Year: 1985
The final story of this season is one of the better entries in this season. But that ain't sayin' much!
Its pretty good, if the rapport between Baker and Bryant was as strong as it becomes at the beginning of the next season, it might of had a chance of being as good as the last season's Dalek story. Luckily, there is a concept inserted into the story that requires the Doctor and Peri to wear blue. So the obnoxious coat is covered for a good portion of the story.
Davros is there and its confusing which is the real him, for they change between the old version in the chair, and one that is just a head. Its just a bit confusing. The Daleks are kind of boring in this one. The voice work for them in this one is just dismal. But there is the cool Human/Mutant Dalek in the clear casing.
Basically despite it's issues...this is a better story for Colin Baker's debut season to end on. I would say the script has issues, particularly the two Davros' stuff. I think the problems are overcome by director Graham Harper, who proves to be one of the few directors of the 80s to try and update the pace and action of the show. It's a more subdued tone that helps this one. Baker isn't as overbearing, and the coat is covered up for a while, and there is a lot of outdoor film work which is much better than overlit cheap studios.
"Vengeance on Varos" is still probably the best story of the Colin Baker era, but this is a solid outing for him, even if the Daleks are kind of lame here.
