Nemesis of the Doctor

Story: Remembrance of the Daleks
Written By: Ben Aaronovitch
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1988

The 25th year of Doctor Who on television begins, and it is a decent story. The Doctor once again lands at 76 Totter's Lane, at least it makes sense for the story this time, which it just plain didn't in "Attack of the Cybermen". It is just more back references that we don't really need...but this time its a special occasion, its the celebration of the 25th years. So I'll allow it.
This is a strong story for McCoy, who never really proved himself in his first season. He is a little darker here, a little more subdued, a bit more mysterious and scary. Its a good thing.

The Daleks and Davros make their final appearance in the series before it comes to an end. The Doctor destroys Skaro for some reason, and its kind of out of character, but it is a decent story overall.  The 80s trilogy of Davros and the Daleks were actually one of the stronger elements of the decade.  Each Dalek story from the Fifth Doctor through to this one developed a story that involved Davros starting a Dalek Civil War between his new Imperial Daleks (with himself placed as Emperor) and the Renegade Daleks who do not follow Davros' lead.

It was a neat idea, and in retrospect you could almost see these three stories, as well as "Genesis of the Daleks" as being the stepping stones for what lead to the Time War between the Daleks and the Time Lords (which is the main backstory of the show starting with the relaunched 2005 series).

NEXT TIME: The Kandy Man
