Azal at Devil's End

Story: The Daemons
Written By: Guy Leopold
Length: 5 Episodes
Year: 1971

"The Daemons" is one of the series' best, and quite possibly Pertwee's best offering. It certainly was his favorite story, and a favorite of many of those who worked on Who at the time. The story just works, the Master is perfectly fit here, the monsters are scary, the atmosphere is wonderful (even in color, though some like to claim the black and white episodes had better atmosphere, and that the Pertwee's had a better atmosphere before being restored to color...I feel Pertwee's stories from Season 8 until Season 10 have fantastic atmosphere).
The supporting characters are well developed and performed, and the scenary and ideas are all there. I think the Brigadier is at his finest here. I really like the rapport between The Doctor and the Brig in the Pertwee era, the Brig's most prominent time on the show. It works better than with any other Doctor.

It also works great as the season closer, as not only is it slightly more epic and the Master kicks it up a notch, but it also end with his arrest (finally), and we get a bit of closure on the Season as whole. Probably the first time in Doctor Who that an arc was attempted, and that it started and paid off so nicely.

If you are a Who fan, but not a completist like me and want to know which Classic stories to watch, "The Daemons" will always be on my list.
