Doctor Who: Season Five Recap

Another season of Doctor Who, in glorious Black and White...only one season left with any missing episodes and without color.

Season 5 is a pretty great season for the most part. Unfortunately not many will ever know as a good portion is missing. It has a better survival rate than Season 4, but then so does every season. Season 3 through 5 are hit pretty hard. Season 2 got away practically unscratched...as Season 1 and 6 took a few good hits but manage to have the majority intact.

The thing is, while Season 4 has less episodes to speak of, the stories missing from Season 5 are often much better than they were in Season 4. This season had stronger writing and a better cast, Victoria, while not my favorite companion of all time, is still better than Ben and Polly (who admittedly weren't half bad themselves, but Victoria flows better and doesn't push Jamie to the background as much). The stories were all a step up as well. "Tomb of the Cybermen", The 2 Yeti stories, and "Enemy of the World" are all quite good, while the last two stories seem like they would be watchable if they existed entirely, but who really knows.

Luckily for fans of Troughton, this classic season is closer to complete than it has been in years!  With the animation of "The Ice Warriors" two missing episodes recently released, and the recent discovery of the entirety of "The Enemy of the World" and all but one episode of "The Web of Fear"...it's great to see more of the Second Doctor in action.  It is also great that his final season got hit the easiest by the wiping policy.

Bring on Season 6...the last Hurrah of the 60s and B&W

NEXT TIME: The Quarks
