Story: Evil of the Daleks
Written By: David Whitaker
Length: 7 Episodes
Year: 1967
"The Evil of the Daleks" is quite a popular Troughton story for fans. One of those stories that has a great reputation even though only one of the 7 parts is still known to exist. I must say its quite a good tale. The Doctor and Jamie have perfected their relationship by this point, and they are a great team to watch. The Daleks are fantastically scary in this story.
They've concocted a plan to force the Doctor into giving the daleks time travel, in order to spread the Dalek Empire. The Doctor is forced with the morals or helping the Doctor, or having everyone the Daleks have kidnapped die. The Daleks are working with Theodore Maxtible, a human who falls into the misguided scientist category. He thinks he is getting something from the Daleks, but in the end they are going to screw him.
I must say Troughton is full-on Doctor here, he's had a whole season to tweak and perfect, and now he is quite comfortable in his frock coat. Jamie is finally able to not take a backseat to Ben and Polly and grow a bit. Also amazing is The Dalek Emperor, who makes his first and only appearence in the Classic series, and wouldn't make a reapearance for a long long time. This story also introduces new companion Victoria Waterfield.
In the end the Daleks are destroyed, suspected to be for good. They wouldn't reappear in the Troughton Era. Dalek Creator Terry Nation wanted to make his own Dalek TV show, apparently not aware that his dalekmania was wearing thin, and really he didn't have any other ideas at the time.
Definately worth a watch, even in recons. I saw an earlier recon, and the more updated version from Loose Cannon looks even better, with full moving CGI Daleks. Theres also several animators on YouTube trying to recreate this story. If you are interested in seeing this despite it's missing status, definitely seek out a version and watch, it really is a good story.
