Story: The Rescue
Written By: David Whitaker
Length: 2 Episodes
Year: 1965
The Rescue is a small but decent story which introduces a new character to join the TARDIS crew, Vicki. Vicki is pretty great...she is sort of everything Susan should have been, slightly stronger (i.e. less prone to cry or moan over every little thing), a little smarter, less awkward, more attractive in my opinion (not to say Carol Ann Ford is unattractive...but Maureen O'Brien is more to my tastes), and her ankles don't twist or get hurt every 5 minutes. On top of that from her on out the Doctor sort of treats Vicki like a surrogate granddaughter, to fill the void left by Susan.
The story itself is pretty good. The TARDIS lands on a deserted planet...that is deserted beyond the two people that survived the crash landing some time ago. Also on the planet is a monster, that Vicki is in complete fear of. As the story is only 2 short episodes, we soon find out that the monster is actually the other survivor, who is a murderer who killed the crew of the ship they were traveling in, including Vicki's father. He usd the monster to keep Vicki in line until the rescue ships arrived.
This story is decent, and is noteworthy for introducing one of my favorite First Doctor companions. Other than that its pretty straightfoward, short and sweet.
