Story: The Aztecs
Written By: John Lucarotti
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1964
"The Aztecs", like "Marco Polo", is a historical episode, with very little sci-fi elements. That said, it does deal with a very science fiction aspect, time travel and the change of history. Barbara is mistaken for an ancient priest, and being a history teacher with knowledge of the time period, she decides to use the sudden accidental power as a way to change the history of the Aztecs for the better.
The Doctor knows better though, and tries to tell her so, but she doesn't listen. Her attempts are proven futile, but this episode brings up an important point in Doctor Who - how time and history work. This is not the last time the subject will be broached, and maybe its not the best time either, but it is a very good tale of someone who thinks that they know better than history, and tries to make everything better...in her eyes.
I would say "The Aztecs" will never get recognition for being the best or even a classic Who story, but I think it is definitely a solid piece of entertainment.
