Story: The Tenth Planet
Written By: Kit Pedler & Gerry Davis
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1966
"The Tenth Planet" is without a doubt one of the most important stories of the entire show. It introduces the Cybermen, who come from the lost tenth planet in our solar system, Mondas. Unlike the Daleks, who go virtually unchanged in every appearance, the Cybermen have rarely returned to the show without some minor change to their look or voice, hell even in th New Series, their return in the christmas special had a new voice...the trend continues. These first cybermen are the creepiest. They are more organic than other versions...so they really feel like they are humans that have been converted. Their voices are so very haunting as well.
Sadly while the first three episodes are intact, the final episode is missing. Luckily low quality footage does exist of the final few moments of the episode. Thank whoever for that, as they are the single most important moments in the whole show.
So what makes this episode truly important is what happens at the very tail end. The Doctor is kind of moving slow throughout the story, and he is even incapacitated for the a long time. He reappears near the end, and helps in saving the day, as per usual. He eventually gets to the TARDIS, and collapses to the floor after setting the controls to some unknown destination. The TARDIS engines roar, as the doctor is turned over and suddenly there is a flash of bright light. The last image of the episode is a moment that changed the series forever, and made it possible for the show to continue to this day.
