Story: Enemy of the World
Written By: David Whitaker
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1968
Patrick Troughton gets a chance at spreading his acting legs in Doctor Who, as he gets to play the hero and the villain in "Enemy of the World". The villain is a dictator/politician/scientist named Salamander. He has found a way to end world hunger, by means of solar energy, after the world is eaten away by an onslaught of natural disasters.
The Doctor (who has a strong likeness to Salamander) discovers that Salamander has not only been manufacturing all of the disasters, but has been tricking innocent people into slavery, by convincing them they are creating the disasters to fight off an imaginary enemy.
The Doctor uses his looks to expose Salamander, and eventually Salamander uses the same plan to escape. He poses as the Doctor and escapes with Jamie and Victoria to the TARDIS. Jamie is suspicious, and his fears are confirmed when Salamander asks Jamie to pilot the TARDIS. Finally the Doctor arrives, and Salamander attempts to make the TARDIS leave anyhow. He forgets to shut the door, and he is sucked out into the vortex. Its pretty epic...especially as the story leaves us hanging with our heroes hanging onto the console for dear life.
As a sidenote: this story had only episode 3 surviving, until very recently! In October 2013, every single episode was found (along with all but episode 3 of the Web of Fear), giving us one more complete story from the 60s, and 6 whole episodes of Troughton that haven't been seen for decades. While this story isn't the best of the Troughton era, it is always lovely to see him in action, particularly since so much is gone. Here's hoping more will turn up in the near future!
NEXT TIME: The Brig...Sort of.
