Story: The Moonbase
Written By: Kit Pedler
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1967
The Moonbase has 50% still in existence, this is an impressive feat for Season 4. Of the four episodes...its kind of strange but...the odd numbered episodes are missing, but we still have copies of the even numbered episodes. The return of episodes is rather odd altogether. How foreign markets themselves retained only one or two parts but not the complete story.
In any case, The Moonbase is the first return of the Cybermen, the first real successful monsters to come closer to the success of the Daleks. The reason being that I think the Cybermen were created by writers with a good idea, as opposed to writers looking to make a profit off of creating "the next Daleks!". The Cybermen look quite different to their original counterparts earlier this season, in Hartnell's final story. The Cybermen in the Moonbase up until The Wheel in Space are definitely my favorite look (thats actually three different designs, but all similar enough).
They have a very simple, elegant, and blank look that just gives you the creepers. Their voices in these versions are made with a mechanical larynx, one of those little devices used for those who have lost their voicebox (if you are still unclear as to what I'm talking about think of Ned on South Park). The story is similar to the Tenth Planet, only the Cybermen are a little cooler, with a sleeker design, and a more prominent Doctor. The unfortunate problem with this episode is that the writier didn't know at first that Jamie was joining the TARDIS, so he is out cold for most of the story. We take advantage of a better more together production team these days.
