The Bloody Days of France

Story: The Reign of Terror
Written By: Dennis Spooner
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1964

"The Reign of Terror" is kind of the 'season finale' story of the debut season of Doctor Who. It isn't so much a finale though, but it is the last story before the Season was wrapped up. The story is another historical, this time during the French Revolution.

The Doctor poses as someone of importance, for the first time adopting the proper attire to do so. The TARDIS crew get themselves wrapped up in events, as per usual, and most of them get imprisoned, as per usual. By the end of the first season, it must be said, these people have already proven that they are bound and determined to get locked up!
I'm not the biggest fan of historicals, which is funny as sometimes I wish they still attempted pure historical episodes...as I want something different then landing, fighting a monster, and leaving all the time. As far as historicals go, this isn't a bad one, but it does go to similar plot points to previous stories...which is kind of sad considering it is still the first season. Then again there is a lot of uniqueness to this historical as well.

It should be noted that this story was recently released on DVD with the two missing episodes animated, like "The Invasion" before it, and with a few more animated episodes planned for the future. The animation helps considerably, as there is a lot of time in those two missing episodes lacking dialogue, and when I originally saw this one it was a recon of some kind, and movement and animation is way more engaging for people picking things up and moving around than still images with a scroll describing the action.  The animation also looks pretty great.  The style is an improvement over "The Invasion" (I do like that style, but this was more detailed), and the accuracy to what the episode originally looked like seems better.  Also, if a historical like "The Reign of Terror"can get animated, it really raises hopes for animation of the missing episodes. Besides, 2 Entertain and the BBC are going to want to continue the DVD line somehow.  If money is in it, they are bound to pursue it.  Hopefully they just see that there is money in it.
