Story: Doctor Who and the Silurians
Written By: Malcolm Hulke
Length: 7 Episodes
Year: 1970
The only episode to have "Doctor Who and" in the title. The Silurians would have been a fine title. Not sure why they added it in this story. Anyhow this story is pretty good. It introduces the Silurians, who would lead to the semi-sequel story "The Sea Devils" which is an absolute classic. This story is good unto itself, unfortunately I think it sort of pales in comparison to the latter story.
That isn't really fair, but it is a story that is good, but not great. It is slightly padded, as is most of Season 7 beyond Spearhead from Space. The monsters are good though, and the end with UNIT blowing up the Silurians even though they had agreed to peace with the Doctor, and the Doctor's anger with the Brig are all done very well.
I do feel that Liz Shaw is the weak link. She is supposed to be intelligent, which is why the Doctor likes her. I just don't think that her intelligence is much fun to watch. Nor does it really pay off too often in her stories.
