The Voord

Story: The Keys of Marinus
Written By: Terry Nation
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1964

The crew of the TARDIS are forced a quest to find the Keys of Marinus, which will save a planet from the Voords. The story is pretty interesting to watch. Certainly not one of the best, but it is definitely a good watch while you are watching it. Plenty of padding but that didn't become less rare in Who until 2005.
What makes this story interesting is the many different places the crew is taken on in order to find these Keys. Each is distinctive in itself. The plot paved the way for stories like the season long arc of the fourth Doctor's era "The Key to Time".

The story isn't groundbreaking. It isn't a first of any of the Doctor Who genres (sci-fi, mystery, historical). It doesn't really add a new monster that will last for years and years...but it is pretty fun to watch if you are into the Hartnell days.

NEXT TIME: Barbara tries to change history.

  1. I will say this, this serial introduced me to Hartnell's Doctor almost a decade ago... I've been a First Doctor fan ever since! Not too shabby... :)
