The Time Fugitive

Story: The Time Warrior
Written By: Robert Holmes
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1974

Robert Holmes creates the next popular recurring monster, the Sontarans. Really, they are actually the first solid recurring monster since the Ice Warriors (and even they only have one more appearance left). The Sontarans are actually quite good, a clone race of warriors (George Lucas was YEARS behind Doctor Who) that look like Mr. Potato Head...but a scary Mr. Potato Head in a space suit/armor.
This is also the first story to feature one of the logest serving and certainly one of the most popular companions - Sarah Jane Smith. Long before her appearance in the new series and subsequent spin off, she was just an investigative journalist who snuck into the TARDIS...and ended up with the Doctor in medieval times.

I really like Sarah Jane, doesn't every fan? I have even become such a Who fan that I even watch her spin off series, which I thought would be far to childish for my tastes...but she makes it watchable...and to be honest once you get into the second series its really entertaining (sometimes...you just got to get the bugs out).

My only problem with Sarah Jane is that her rapport is Pertwee isn't fantastic. When she starts out, she is living in the shadow of Jo Grant, who was amazing with Pertwee. Their relationship is watchable, and it has its moments, but overall when I was watching I didn't really see what all the Sarah Jane hype was all about (that is...until Tom Baker came, for her rapport with him is one of the best in the series...thats what the hype is about). So as for Sarah Jane, the main conclusion is that her relationship with Pertwee is decent, but she only gets a year to develop that relationship. It is servicable, but not near as good as he was with Jo, or she would eventually be with Doctor #4.  Will talk about Season 12 and Tom Baker later though.

"The Time Warrior" introduces the name of the Doctor's home planet (Gallifrey), a fan favorite character, and great monsters/villains, which both oddly enough have had their re-introduction into the series via NuWho. Definitely a story to see for Who fans.
