Story: The Celestial Toymaker
Written By: Brian Hayles
Length: 4 Episodes
Year: 1966
"The Celestial Toymaker" is pretty fun. The Doctor is forced into a battle of wits with the Toymaker, played very well by Michael Gough who would later be very popular in my childhood as Alfred, Batman's butler. The first three episodes are missing, which is, as usual, a shame. The final episode is still here and gives a taste of what the other episodes would have felt like had they existed completely, not just in audio. The companions are forced to play certain games to escape the Toyroom, while the doctor is put to his own test by the Toymaker.
This story is a classic, and it is a crying shame it can't be more classic by still existing. In my opinion though, I find no other story to be a better canidate for animation in the Hartnell era. 3 episodes is a lot easier than, say, 9 episodes like Daleks' Master Plan, and the story itself totally suits the feel of animation in itself. The Tenth Planet is clearly more sought after and with only 1 episode missing it would be easier to animate, but this story would fit perfectly into the animated world.
NEXT TIME: The Old West.
