The Space Wheel

Story: The Wheel in Space
Written By: David Whitaker
Length: 6 Episodes

Another 6-parter in season 5. The padding was too much. I much prefer a short season to a drawn out one. Anyhow here we are, the last serial of yet another season. A new companion gets added as the Cybermen return. The Cybermen were really the main baddies of the Troughton era, much like the Daleks were for Hartnell, and the Master would eventually be for Pertwee. This story is okay, but it definitely is not new territory.
A space station verses the Cybermen. A lot like the base in the south pole in the Tenth Planet, or the moonbase in The Moonbase...So there is nothing new except now the base isn't on a ground, its floating.

The new companion, Zoe, is great though. I prefer her to Victoria any day. Of the Troughton era, I find the Doctor/Jamie/Zoe team to work the best. Right from the start the gel well together. Moreso than Victoria really did. Zoe is also a strong willed character, not always panicked and scared. She can sream, but she is also smart and a little brave. I also like the dynamic of the companion from the future and the companion from the past being lead by the Doctor. Its a fun dynamic.

So "The Wheel in Space" gives a new companion, a good one at that, but very little else you haven't seen. I still wish the whole story wasn't missing, but its not on my high priorty list of episodes to find.
