Story: Invasion of the Dinosaurs
Written By: Malcolm Hulke
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1974
There is a bit of padding, and the special effects are horrendous, but theres a lot to like here. Despite its budget and effects, its a rather enjoyable story...somewhat charming. Its weird, but in its own way it works. It also features the unfortunate fall of Mike Yates. He, after the events of "The Green Death", has become increasingly concerned for the Earth's environment, and joins a misguided effort to "save the world" and bring it back to its beginnings.
Luckily the Doctor is able to save the day, but not without Yates losing his position in UNIT. The Brig, out of respect and a fondness for Mike, lets him take a leave, and be quietly discharged.
This story has really really bad effects. The dinosaurs look like toys, and make you sort of wish it was a guy in a costume. Episode 1 is in Black and White, though it has been restored to color for DVD (the process wasn't as successful this time around so the Black and White version is still available since it is cleaner. I personally preferred the color restored attempt).
Padded and problematic, but a decent story is actually at the heart of this Pertwee tale.
NEXT TIME: Doctor Who and the Daleks....again
