The Last Hurrah of the UNIT Family

Story: The Green Death
Written By: Robert Sloman
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1973

Roger Delgado's death ended the Pertwee era. This is sort of the finale to the UNIT Family arc, which began with Terror of the Autons. I really haven't taken the time to talk about Jo. I love her. I think the relationship between Katy Manning and Jon Pertwee was one of the best team ups in Who, right up their with Troughton and Hines. She was the perfect companion for his version of the Doctor, and although I didn't mention it in my review of the story, she showed true braveness when she attempted to sacrifice herself for the Doctor. In this story we see how much Jo has grown since she clumsily met the Doctor in Terror of the Autons, and announced herself as his assistant. Throughout the Green Death we get hints that Jo can't be with the Doctor forever. She is mature now, she has grown, and she isn't quite the clutz she was when she first walked into his lab.
Katy Manning was rather upset at the death of Roger Delgado, and decided that she couldn't stay with the show. So this became her final story. The death of Delgado affected the whole team, as Producer Barry Letts and Script Editor Terrance Dicks would both decide to move on after the next season, and eventually, feeling that his family was breaking up...Pertwee decided to demand more money or he was leaving...I think he knew what the BBC would say "Later!"

So here we have a story about the enviroment, giant deadly maggots, a dashing scientist who Jo falls for (as he is like the Doctor, only her age), and UNIT in full swing. It really feels like the last hurrah for the UNIT family.

The final scene between the Doctor and Jo is wonderful, and one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. The Doctor says his goodbye, and leaves the party early, hiding his true feelings and hurt from Jo. Its touching as hell.

Oh and at one point in the story the Doctor dresses in drag.
