Story: The Invasion of Time
Written By: David Agnew
Length: 6 Episodes
Year: 1978
The conclusion to Season 15 is pretty decent, considering how lame the season actually was. But once again it suffers from too much padding. It might have made a rather strong 4 part story, but as it stands it is decent in its own way. Anywho there is far too much time spent wandering the same corridor sets or the same backstage areas pretending to be more rooms in the TARDIS.
The return to Gallifrey once again makes the Time Lords just slightly more boring, but the attack of the Sontarans on the planet is pretty good. They were just almost always good. I hesitate to say always...for I've seen the Two Doctors.
Leela leaves at the end of this story, as does K-9...sort of. Leela's departure was in so many ways weak. There is no inclination that she has grown or wants to move on at all throughout the story, like there was for Jo or Sarah Jane, and there was no real romance brewing between her and the guy she claims she wants to marry at the end...so its all completely contrived and clearly a lazy last minute rewrite to shoe horn in the actress' desire to leave.
K-9 decides to stay on Gallifrey with her...for some reason. I never understood that. See if they just wanted to get rid of him, due to the tin dog being so hard to control on an location shoots, I'd understand it. But they don't write him out of the show...the Doctor just ends the story by pulling out a "K-9 Mark II" box. What? If they totally redesigned him then maybe that make sense, but most of the redesigns were purely done to make him slightly more all terrain for the show. He still wasn't all terrain just slightly more. All around a weird writing decision. Weird end to a decent story.
