Story: Torchwoood: Combat
Written By: Noel Clarke
Length: 50 Minutes

It was going so well. "Combat" is on the better end of the first season episodes, but like always they fuck it up. The ending is a mess. For a good chunk of the episode we have a bit of mystery, dark tone, creepy settings and whatnot...then it turns out that all that's really going on is a bunch of guys who watch Fight Club one to many times.
First off Gwen. Oh my god I hate her so much. The problem with her character is really in the writing. If they didn't spend so much time having everyone in Torchwood act like she is such a sympathetic and full of heart person, I wouldn't be so annoyed with her actual character arc. Basically her arc has been as such: She is conflicted between her new exciting job and her old life with Rhys. This could be a very interesting storyline, but they way it is written and they way its performed, it always comes off as if she just likes work and is with Rhys because she doesn't want to move. Every scene with Rhys you see him being a pretty damn good boyfriend, trying to put up with all her shit, and then you get her, ignoring him, staring off into space and pretty much acting like a cunt. So I'm always siding with Rhys, because the other option is someone who is constantly lying, manipulating, and ignoring her honest, hardworking, puts-up-with-all-her-shit boyfriend.
In this episode the guy is pushed to his limits, he gets one night out of her, and on their date she pretty much ignores him until Jack happens to show up, and she jumps at the chance to ditch Rhys in favor of work. So he rightly gets rather irked by the situation, and asks her to stay, she ignores him and is about to continue on, because she is so sympathetic, he has to forgive her. Of course he yells at her, and she acts like he is the bad guy. So when she finally does take a night off, he decides to go out, good for him. When he comes home, she finally confesses that she cheated on him with Owen...then promptly informs the audience how big a bitch she is, by drugging him with Retcon. What the fuck? Now she claims that she wanted to get it all out in the open, and that she NEEDS him to forgive her, but there are major flaws with this. For one, she has negating any impact this could have on their relationship, thus making the scene useless. Two, this doesn't get shit out in the open because he will immediately forget everything. Three, he is right when he calls her a selfish bitch, because she is. She cheats on him with Owen, then confesses and tries to get forgiveness before he forgets entirely what just happened. Bullshit, waste of a good storyline. It really annoys me that just a few episodes ago we are supposed to believe that Gwen is the heart of the team and the only one that can use the resurrection gauntlet, and now she can be such a selfish cunt.
Now Owen. He is SO heartbroken over the girl he fell in love with over the course of a couple days that he doesn't even want to go to work. Right. Then he gets put undercover to infiltrate these fight club people. Now Owen is a character that is often mugging to the camera, and it works to be honest, but then they put him with this other actor...and for a good chunk of their scenes together I kept thinking they were just having a mug off. Who could grimace the longest...
Like I said this episode was going pretty well until the fight club things started happening, then I just couldn't take it seriously.
