You Just Watch Me

Story: Torchwoood: Children of Earth - Day Five
Written By: Russell T. Davies
Length: 60 Minutes
Year: 2009

The final episode of this brilliant five-part arc. So Clem and Ianto are dead. Jack's family is in custody, and so is he and Lois Habiba. Gwen is forced to admit defeat and tells Rhys its over, and he doesn't send the footage of the cabinet. I kind of take issue with this, because I think they still could have sent this footage to warn the people...but I don't maybe they were right, there's no stopping the 456 so don't make things worse. Its the children or everybody.
Gwen, Rhys, and PC Andy drive to Ianto's family to inform him of his death. What the discover is that They have been keeping neighborhood kids in their home. So Rhys and Gwen decide to help them all escape the military officials coming to take them all for "inoculations."

There is a powerful scene in this episode in which Frobisher's assistant visits Lois in jail, and informs her that he was a good man. Its really well written...and its juxtaposed against the image of Frobisher, who has been informed that his children are to be made an example of...and taken to the none existent inoculations, and he gathers his whole family in a room...and kills his two daughters, his wife, and then himself. Its dark.

Jack is broken out of jail by Agent Johnson, and along with his daughter and grandson is taken to try and save the world from this tragedy. He forms a plan, a reverse of how the 456 killed Clem, use the children to broadcast back to the 456 and destroy them...unfortunately he doesn't have a piece to the puzzle. The creepy old Mr. Dekkar of course is quick to point out that Jack has exactly what he needs to solve this problem...but its the worst choice in the world. Now at this point in the story it might be good to know we've now learned that the kids are pretty much just drugs for the 456, they are shooting up kids. So either Jack lets 10% of the Earth's children be taken by the 456 as drug cartels, or he has to use his grandson as the link to the 456. The link, by the way, is going to fry.

So Jack makes the hard decision, and he tells the militia to use his grandson. Jack's daughter screams in protest and attempts to save him, but the militia stop her, grab the kid and lock her out of the room. Jack puts in the code and his grandson becomes the sacrifice of this situation, and the 456 are destroyed after all the children scream.

There is some powerful stuff in this final episode. I can't do most of it justice by explaining it to you. Do yourself a favor, and watch Children of Earth. Its worth it.

The ending is a nice wrap up to the story and Torchwood itself. Jack apparently travels the world, with Gwen and Rhys settling down a bit as she prepares to have a baby (oh yea she finds out shes pregnant in Day One, did I mention that?). Six months after the events of Children of Earth take place, Gwen and Rhys meet Jack atop a hill. He says Earth is too small, and he is taking off. He's gonna run away from his problems. Gwen begs him not to, but hes mind is made up. Since he took over Torchwood 3, he has lost everyone he has recruited except Gwen. Suzie, Owen twice, Tosh, Ianto, and he himself has died numerous times. With the killing of his own grandson at his word, and the permanent estrangement of his daughter, he can't stay on this planet any longer...not with the damage he's done to everyone he loves. Damn if you think about it his brother was frozen in the hub...he's dead too. Jack can't catch a break...and ditches town.
