Story: Torchwoood: Something Borrowed
Written By: Phil Ford
Length: 50 Minutes
Year: 2008
Things were going so well. After a string of good to great episodes suddenly we get this mediocre crap that would have fit perfectly into season one. The problem is, all of the characters have grown and developed since Series 1, and it seemed up until this episode that so had Gwen. But she reverted back to being the naive idiot stubborn dolt she was throughout that first season.
It is her wedding day, and despite knowing how her job can really fuck things up she decides to work the night before, and is even late to her bachelorette party. This is stupid in and of itself, but the results of her night at work are completely convenient for an "interesting tale." She wakes up on her wedding day pregnant...WHAT LUCK.
What ensues is mostly weak storytelling, filled with sci-fi/fantasy cliches. A shape-shifting villain and having to deal with all the suddenly pregnant stuff, that Star Trek: The Next Generation did 20 years ago (a plot that didn't work then either). Its not smart, its not funny, and its all to easily solved. In the end its a weak ass episode. Gwen not changing the wedding date also makes no sense. At first her reasoning is the money, but then when Rhys tells her that is not a good enough excuse she tells him its the day...it has to be. FUCK THE DAY. You want your perfect wedding day? Then fucking wait like a week and the problem will be solved. That character needs to grow up.
All in all it feels like we just took a step backwards in the series, had this taken place right before End of Days it would have been excusable. As it stands...it's not.
