Story: The Waters of Mars
Written By: Russell T. Davies & Phil Ford
Length: 60 Minutes
Year: 2009
This is what I’m talking about. This is SPECIAL. The Doctor is put into a similar situation as he was in The Fires of Pompeii, only this time it’s a historical event that for us, hasn’t happened yet, but the Doctor knows all about it, just like he would Pompeii. The difference though is that it turns out the Doctor had it lucky at Pompeii…choose a thousand folks to die or the whole planet. But this time? Get to know 5 to 10 people, then have no choice but to walk away knowing their destruction because of its effect on the future of the human race. The monsters are new and different and great. I enjoyed them very much. The Doctor uncharacteristically spends most of the episode not jumping to action. Its really quite good…especially when he makes the choice.
The Doctor decides that he isn’t just the Last of the Time Lords…he is THE Time Lord. The Winner. He makes the rules now. He’s gonna save them. And when he shows up and jumps to action it is amazing, you are so excited. And Tennant is fantastic in these scenes. He moves so quickly and takes control in epic fashion. He can’t save the base, but he saves the survivors.
That’s when we realize he has made a grave mistake. Adelaide, the captain of the base and the hero that inspires humans of the future, knows too much and is not happy with what the Doctor has done. His arrogance and demeanor at this point are so scary that he seems less like our Doctor and more like the Master. The Time Lord Victorious. Then Adelaide shows him how wrong he is. She goes into her home. And kills herself. The Doctor suddenly realizes the story remains the same with a minor change. He has gone too far. He sees a vision of Ood Sigma from Planet of the Ood…and he fears that his death and time have come. He heads into the TARDIS…and takes off…he knows where he’s going…but we don’t. Roll the hell on Christmas!
